Every options trade in the United States is reported publicly, within seconds, whoever placed it. That reported stream is the flow. It is not a leak and it is not inside information — it is a public record that happens to be far too fast and far too large for any person to read.
Millions of trades cross in a day. The overwhelming majority are routine: hedges, adjustments, small positions, market makers doing their job. Reading the flow usefully is almost entirely a question of throwing things away.
What survives is worth looking at because size is hard to disguise. Somebody putting millions of dollars behind a directional view has to go through the same public tape as everybody else.
It is the closest a retail trader gets to seeing what large investors are doing while they are still doing it, rather than reading about it in a filing months later.
