Our reading of the filing · Free to read, no account needed

RLI delivered strong Q2 GAAP results, with consolidated revenue up 15.2% to $575.569 million and net earnings up to $168.028 million, aided by $103.024 million of unrealized equity gains and a 17% increase in investment income. Core underwriting was modestly weaker: underwriting income fell to $59.909 million and the combined ratio increased to 85.6, driven by a higher expense ratio and near-breakeven casualty underwriting. Premium growth remained concentrated in casualty, while property and surety premiums declined; operating cash flow also fell $90.184 million year over year for the first half.

Pulled out of the filing itself, with the figures the company reported.

Revenue and investment income increased
Second-quarter consolidated revenue was $575.569 million, up $75.743 million (15.2%) from $499.826 million a year earlier. Net premiums earned increased 4% to $417.096 million, while net investment income rose 17% to $46.042 million.
GAAP earnings rose on investment gains
GAAP net earnings increased to $168.028 million from $124.336 million in Q2 2025, supported by $103.024 million of unrealized equity gains versus $43.500 million a year earlier and higher investment income.
Property underwriting improved materially
Property underwriting income grew to $53.499 million from $49.511 million, and its combined ratio improved 5.3 points to 56.8. Favorable reserve development was $23 million and storm losses were $9 million, versus $10 million and $13 million, respectively, in Q2 2025.
Casualty drove premium growth
Casualty net premiums earned rose to $256.922 million from $234.638 million, led by commercial excess/personal umbrella at $126.854 million versus $106.055 million and commercial transportation at $33.632 million versus $30.015 million.
Portfolio income and yields strengthened
Net investment income increased to $46.042 million from $39.418 million. The taxable fixed-income pretax yield expanded to 4.40% from 4.06%, reflecting higher reinvestment rates and a larger average asset base.

What to watch

And the other side of it.

The offsets in the same document — the things a summary that only listed the good news would have left out.

Expense growth pressured underwriting margin
Consolidated underwriting income declined to $59.909 million from $62.230 million, while the combined ratio worsened 1.1 points to 85.6 as the expense ratio increased to 40.1 from 38.6.
Casualty profitability approached breakeven
Casualty underwriting income fell to $1.742 million from $8.289 million and its combined ratio deteriorated to 99.3 from 96.5. Favorable prior-year reserve development declined to $13 million from $15 million.
Property pricing competition reduced premiums
Property gross premiums written decreased to $199.276 million from $211.817 million, including a $17 million decline in commercial-property premiums amid increased capacity and competition pressuring pricing.
Operating cash generation declined
Operating cash flow decreased to $188.049 million in the first six months from $278.233 million, primarily from higher loss-settlement payments, tax-credit purchases, and employee compensation payments. Capital expenditures were not separately disclosed, so free cash flow cannot be calculated.
New debt raised interest burden
Outstanding debt was $297 million at June 30 following issuance of $300 million of 5.375% senior notes due June 1, 2036. Interest and fees rose to $7 million in the first six months from $3 million a year earlier.
Interest-rate exposure remains a portfolio risk
The filing reported no material changes to risk factors. However, the fixed-income portfolio carried $142.934 million of unrealized losses at June 30, 2026, and first-half other comprehensive loss was $28 million due primarily to rising interest rates.
