Provident delivered modestly improved fiscal 2026 profitability, with net income up 6% to $6.7 million, diluted EPS of $1.03 and net interest margin expansion to 3.09%. The strategy emphasizes moderate California loan growth and a greater mix of core deposits, but actual loan balances declined and funding shifted toward brokered CDs. Strong capital and liquidity capacity support dividends, buybacks and lending, while office commercial real estate concentration and greater rate sensitivity temper the outlook.

What stood out

The parts that mattered.

Pulled out of the filing itself, with the figures the company reported.

Moderate growth strategy with stronger origination
Management plans moderate asset growth focused on expanding single-family, multi-family and commercial real estate loans, while shifting funding toward lower-cost checking and savings accounts. Fiscal 2026 loan originations increased 32% to $162.3 million, although ending loans declined 1.25%.
Margin expansion lifted net interest income
Net interest income increased 2% to $36.3 million, while net interest margin expanded 16 basis points to 3.09% from 2.93%. The improvement reflected a 17-basis-point increase in the interest-rate spread and an 8% reduction in interest expense to $19.6 million.
Earnings and efficiency improved
Net income rose 6% to $6.7 million from $6.3 million, and diluted EPS increased to $1.03 from $0.93. Return on average assets improved to 0.55% from 0.50%, while the efficiency ratio improved to 77.32% from 78.96%.
Asset quality remained favorable
Credit metrics improved: average non-performing loans declined to $1.0 million from $2.1 million, non-performing assets fell to 0.04% of total assets from 0.11%, and the allowance for credit losses declined to $5.9 million from $6.4 million after a $553,000 net recovery of credit losses.
Strong cash generation and debt reduction
Operating cash flow was $8.970 million and purchases of premises and equipment were $432,000, implying approximately $8.538 million of free cash flow before other investing items. The company also reduced FHLB borrowings by $56.1 million, or 26%, to $157.0 million.
Shareholder returns backed by strong capital
Capital returns remained substantial: the company repurchased 344,473 shares for $5.983 million at a weighted average cost of $16.20 per share and paid $3.592 million of cash dividends, or $0.56 per share. The Bank remained well capitalized, with a 10.30% Tier 1 leverage ratio and 20.34% total risk-based capital ratio.
What to watch

And the other side of it.

The offsets in the same document — the things a summary that only listed the good news would have left out.

Office CRE concentration
Commercial real estate office exposure remains material in the California portfolio. Commercial real estate totaled $66.7 million, including $33.3 million, or 49.9%, secured by office properties; management notes higher vacancy, slower leasing and downward pressure on rents could impair collateral values and borrower repayment capacity.
Deposit mix shifted toward brokered CDs
Funding quality deteriorated despite 2% deposit growth to $910.4 million. Brokered CDs increased 23% to $161.4 million, transaction accounts fell to 61% of deposits from 65%, and retail deposits declined 1% to $749.0 million, increasing reliance on potentially more rate-sensitive funding.
Interest-rate and liquidity sensitivity worsened
The balance sheet remains vulnerable to repricing and falling-rate scenarios. The cumulative repricing gap was negative $160.4 million through three years, while the modeled 12-month net interest income impact from a 200-basis-point rate decline was negative 4.63%, compared with negative 3.24% in the prior year; adverse NPV sensitivity worsened to 125 basis points from 98 basis points.
