ORC delivered a major year-over-year and sequential earnings recovery: Q2 GAAP EPS was $0.44 versus $(0.29) in Q2 2025 and $(0.11) in Q1 2026, helped by $60.0 million of net interest income and $36.0 million of portfolio/derivative gains. Its larger $11.5 billion Agency RMBS portfolio, improved 1.94% GAAP net interest spread, $682.6 million cash balance, and ATM capital raising strengthened earnings capacity and liquidity. Offsetting this, ORC remains highly rate-sensitive and dependent on short-term repo financing, with $11.1 billion of borrowings, 7.7:1 adjusted leverage, and a modeled 20.53% book-value decline under a 200-bp rate increase.
The parts that mattered.
Pulled out of the filing itself, with the figures the company reported.
- GAAP earnings swing sharply positive
- Q2 GAAP net income was $89.2 million, or $0.44 per share, versus a $33.6 million loss, or $(0.29) per share, in Q2 2025; it also reversed Q1 2026's $(0.11) per-share loss. Net interest income rose to $60.0 million from $23.2 million year over year and $57.1 million sequentially.
- Net interest income and spread expanded
- The reported revenue proxy, GAAP net interest income, increased $36.8 million year over year to $60.0 million. The GAAP net interest spread widened 79 bps to 1.94%, from 1.15% in Q2 2025, and improved 3 bps sequentially from 1.91%.
- Larger portfolio and lower funding cost
- Average RMBS rose to $11.44 billion from $6.87 billion in Q2 2025, while average RMBS yield increased 36 bps to 5.74%. Average cost of funds fell 43 bps to 3.80%, supporting higher net interest income.
- Market gains supported quarterly profit
- Q2 gains on RMBS and derivatives were $36.0 million, compared with a $28.6 million loss in Q2 2025. Derivative gains were $62.4 million, more than offsetting $26.4 million of RMBS losses.
- Liquidity and equity base increased
- Cash and cash equivalents were $682.6 million at June 30, while stockholders' equity increased to $1.44 billion from $1.37 billion at December 31, 2025. The company also raised $135.5 million of net proceeds through its ATM program during the first six months.
- Expanded repurchase capacity
- The board added 25.0 million shares to the repurchase authorization on June 22; 26.6 million shares remained authorized as of July 23. During Q2, ORC repurchased 1.1 million shares at a $6.64 weighted-average price.
And the other side of it.
The offsets in the same document — the things a summary that only listed the good news would have left out.
- No risk-factor updates; rate sensitivity remains high
- Risk-factor disclosure was unchanged: the filing states there were no material changes from the 2025 Form 10-K. Nonetheless, modeled book value sensitivity is substantial: a 200-bp rate increase is estimated to reduce book value by 20.53%, versus 25.31% at December 31, 2025.
- Short-term repo funding and leverage
- Repurchase-agreement debt was $11.09 billion at June 30, 2026, up from $10.12 billion at December 31, 2025, with a 33-day weighted-average remaining maturity. Adjusted leverage increased to 7.7:1 from 7.4:1, exposing the portfolio to refinancing and margin-call risk.
- Higher duration amid inflation uncertainty
- The RMBS portfolio's effective duration increased to 3.180 at June 30 from 2.513 at December 31, 2025. Management cited persistent inflation and an unresolved Iran War as factors that could lead to higher funding levels; the portfolio's modeled 100-bp rate-rise book-value impact is 5.58%.
- External-management costs rose
- Operating expenses increased to $6.8 million in Q2 from $5.0 million a year earlier, including management fees of $4.1 million versus $3.0 million. The increase follows portfolio and equity growth and partly offsets the stronger interest margin.
- ATM issuance creates dilution risk
- The company issued 18.6 million shares for $137.7 million gross proceeds during the first six months under the October 2025 ATM program. While this added $135.5 million of net capital, continued ATM issuance can dilute existing shareholders.
