MGPI earnings analysis

What we found in MGPI's 10-Q: the parts that mattered, the offsets in the same document, and what the company said about what comes next.

Our reading of the filing · Free to read, no account needed

MGP reported Q2 revenue of $124.357 million, down 15% year over year, as a 42% decline in Distilling Solutions more than offset modest Ingredient Solutions growth and premium-plus spirits growth. Gross margin fell 2.7 percentage points to 37.4%, but SG&A and advertising reductions helped preserve a 14.2% operating margin; diluted EPS of $0.55 declined from $0.67 but exceeded the supplied $0.50 consensus estimate. Liquidity remains supported by $574.400 million of combined stated borrowing availability, although year-to-date operating cash flow was a $40.732 million outflow, debt rose to $369.596 million, and a customer bankruptcy required a $2.148 million reserve.

What stood out

The parts that mattered.

Pulled out of the filing itself, with the figures the company reported.

EPS beat despite year-over-year decline
Q2 diluted EPS was $0.55, down $0.12 or 18% from $0.67 a year earlier, but above the $0.50 consensus estimate supplied. Operating margin improved 0.2 percentage points to 14.2% despite lower sales.
Premium-plus spirits continued to grow
Premium-plus Branded Spirits sales increased $1.546 million, or 5%, to $32.645 million; the segment's gross margin improved 0.2 percentage points to 53.0%. Management attributed growth to continued momentum in American whiskey offerings.
Ingredient sales returned to modest growth
Ingredient Solutions revenue increased $0.533 million, or 2%, to $35.507 million, led by $1.123 million of biofuel and other sales plus higher specialty wheat starch and protein price/mix.
Cost-savings initiatives supported earnings
Cost reductions partly buffered gross-profit pressure: SG&A declined $2.919 million, or 13%, to $20.237 million, while advertising and promotion expense fell $1.230 million, or 18%, to $5.683 million.
Substantial stated borrowing capacity
Management states that $338.000 million remained available under its Credit Agreement and $236.400 million under the Note Purchase Agreement at June 30, 2026, and that it met its debt covenants and restrictions.
What to watch

And the other side of it.

The offsets in the same document — the things a summary that only listed the good news would have left out.

Brown-goods demand drove steep sales decline
Consolidated Q2 sales fell $21.137 million, or 15%, to $124.357 million, driven primarily by a $20.780 million, or 42%, decline in Distilling Solutions. Brown-goods revenue fell $20.797 million, or 59%, as elevated industry barrel inventories reduced customer volume demand.
Ingredient margin compressed sharply
Gross margin declined 2.7 percentage points to 37.4%. Ingredient Solutions gross profit fell $4.018 million, or 53%, and its margin contracted 11.6 percentage points to 10.1%, primarily from higher waste-starch-stream costs and weaker commodity wheat starch mix.
Inventory build turned operating cash flow negative
Year-to-date operating cash flow swung to a $40.732 million outflow from $56.357 million inflow. Inventory growth used $25.631 million of cash, principally from higher barreled-distillate inventory, while inventories totaled $408.416 million at June 30.
Debt and interest-rate exposure increased
Total debt increased to $369.596 million at June 30, 2026 from $252.318 million at December 31, 2025, following $116.800 million of net debt proceeds. A 100-basis-point increase in rates would raise annual interest expense by $1.070 million on unhedged variable-rate borrowings.
Customer bankruptcy creates collection risk
A significant customer filed for Chapter 11 reorganization on July 26, 2026, prompting a $2.148 million credit-loss allowance and provision. Management is evaluating effects on future sales and collections, and states the ultimate recovery could differ from its estimate.
No formal risk-factor update
No new Item 1A risk factors were added in this 10-Q; the filing incorporates the 2025 Form 10-K risk factors. However, the $2.148 million credit-loss provision is a newly quantified operating development disclosed in the quarter.
