LEE earnings analysis

What we found in LEE's 10-Q: the parts that mattered, the offsets in the same document, and what the company said about what comes next.

Our reading of the filing · Free to read, no account needed

Lee's third-quarter results showed a sharp revenue contraction but meaningful operating improvement: revenue fell 10.8% year over year to $126.0 million while operating income rose 85.2% to $8.6 million and diluted EPS improved to $0.21 from $(0.31). Cost discipline, lower interest expense and the absence of prior-year Cyber Incident costs drove profitability, but subscriber losses and declines across print and digital revenue remain significant headwinds. Liquidity improved following the $50.0 million Private Placement, although $395.3 million of net debt and continued pressure on cash flows remain important risks.

What stood out

The parts that mattered.

Pulled out of the filing itself, with the figures the company reported.

Cost actions expanded operating profit
Total operating expenses declined 13.9% year over year to $118.3 million, exceeding the 10.8% revenue decline to $126.0 million. Operating income increased 85.2% to $8.6 million from $4.7 million.
Quarter returned to profitability
Net income was $5.2 million versus a $1.7 million loss in the prior-year quarter, and diluted EPS improved to $0.21 from $(0.31). The filing attributes the improvement to cost reductions, lower interest expense, the absence of prior-year Cyber Incident costs and a $2.3 million settlement gain.
EBITDA improved despite revenue pressure
Adjusted EBITDA rose 23.0% year over year to $18.4 million from $14.9 million, while Cash Costs fell 14.5% to $109.4 million from $128.0 million.
Liquidity and borrowing costs improved
Cash on hand was $59.4 million and net debt was $395.3 million at June 28, 2026. The Private Placement generated $50.0 million of gross proceeds and reduced the 25-year term-loan margin from 9.00% to 5.00% for five years.
Operating cash generation strengthened
Nine-month operating cash flow increased to $6.1 million from $0.8 million in the prior-year period. Investing cash use was $1.3 million, with only $1.1 million of asset-sale proceeds versus $8.7 million in the prior year, indicating limited reliance on real-estate monetization in the period.
Mix continued shifting toward digital
Digital revenue represented 56.8% of total operating revenue, up from 55.5% for the nine-month period, and digital advertising represented 75.6% of advertising and marketing services revenue versus 73.8% a year earlier.
What to watch

And the other side of it.

The offsets in the same document — the things a summary that only listed the good news would have left out.

Broad-based revenue and subscriber decline
Revenue declined 10.8% year over year to $126.0 million. Print advertising fell 17.1% to $14.5 million, print subscriptions fell 13.5% to $32.9 million, and digital-only subscribers declined 12.8% to 584,000.
Churn and Cyber Incident effects persist
Management cited accelerated churn following inflationary surcharges and the lasting impact of the Cyber Incident; digital-only subscription revenue fell 7.0% to $21.8 million. The company also reported $6.4 million of Cyber Incident-related insurance recoveries in the nine-month period, creating a non-recurring benefit to expense comparisons.
New litigation and unresolved cyber claims
The filing newly identifies an Associated Press lawsuit filed in June 2026 seeking damages, interest and attorneys' fees, although the potential loss is not reasonably estimable. Separately, a Cyber Incident settlement involving approximately 39,700 individuals remains subject to court approval, which management anticipates by August 2026.
High leverage and liquidity sensitivity
The company had $59.4 million of cash and $395.3 million of debt net of cash. The credit amendment treats cash above $64.0 million as Excess Cash Flow for five years, while management acknowledges that transformation spending and Cyber Incident impacts have placed pressure on liquidity.
Concentrated ownership and control
David H. Hoffmann beneficially owned 54.5% of aggregate voting power as of June 28, 2026. The controlled-company structure may permit exemptions from Nasdaq requirements and limits minority shareholders' ability to influence governance or block transactions.
