HRZN earnings analysis
What we found in HRZN's 10-Q: the parts that mattered, the offsets in the same document, and what the company said about what comes next.
Our reading of the filing · Free to read, no account needed
Q2 investment income increased 2.1% year over year to $25.045 million and reported EPS was $0.11, but a $38.533 million unrealized depreciation charge and $4.4 million of merger expenses materially pressured results. Net investment income fell to $7.393 million from $11.449 million a year earlier as expenses increased 36.9% to $17.387 million. Liquidity and operating cash generation improved, but increased PIK income, lower portfolio yield and a sizable pool of rating-4 and rating-5 credits underpin a bearish trend assessment.
The parts that mattered.
Pulled out of the filing itself, with the figures the company reported.
- Investment income continued modest growth
- Total investment income rose 2.1% year over year to $25.045 million from $24.520 million, and increased about 4.0% sequentially from $24.079 million in Q1 2026 (derived from $49.124 million first-half income less $25.045 million Q2 income). Interest income increased 5.7% to $23.9 million as average earning debt investments rose 6.7% to $652.3 million.
- Portfolio expanded despite repayments
- Portfolio fair value increased to $676.711 million at June 30 from $647.244 million at December 31. Q2 originations of $72.762 million exceeded the $47.123 million of principal payments, early payoffs and paydowns, before valuation changes.
- Cash generation and deleveraging improved
- Liquidity remained meaningful: cash and money-market investments were $132.3 million, while total debt outstanding net of issuance costs fell to $402.443 million from $473.027 million at year-end. Operating activities generated $81.4 million of cash in the first six months, versus $36.4 million a year earlier.
- Share repurchases deployed at discount
- The company repurchased 1,365,222 shares for $6.2 million at an average $4.54 per share in Q2. Subsequently, on August 3, the Board increased the repurchase authorization to $20.0 million.
- Senior loan exposure and key sectors grew
- Asset mix shifted toward senior lending: Senior Term Loans represented 97.7%, or $633.3 million, of debt investments at fair value. Software debt investments grew $38.473 million to $224.007 million and biotechnology grew $24.702 million to $82.455 million versus year-end.
And the other side of it.
The offsets in the same document — the things a summary that only listed the good news would have left out.
- Valuation losses accelerated sharply
- Net unrealized depreciation was $38.533 million in Q2, worsening from $22.156 million a year earlier, and drove a $37.262 million net decrease in net assets from operations versus a $20.777 million decrease in the prior-year quarter.
- Stressed-credit exposure increased
- Five rating-5 credits had $58.0 million of cost but only $31.3 million of fair value, while four rating-4 credits had $57.1 million of cost and $48.0 million of fair value. Management attributed deterioration to low portfolio-company cash, difficult equity fundraising and underperformance.
- Income quality weakened and yields declined
- Non-cash PIK interest rose 544.4% to $1.6 million and represented 6.3% of Q2 investment income, versus 1.0% a year earlier. Debt-investment yield also declined to 14.9% from 15.8%.
- Large unfunded commitments pressure liquidity
- Unfunded commitments were $153.516 million at June 30, including $16.6 million of undrawn revolver commitments, compared with $132.3 million of cash and money-market investments. These commitments could require future liquidity deployment despite milestone conditions.
- Risk-factor update: Middle East conflict
- The sole disclosed material risk-factor update for the six months ended June 30, 2026 concerned Middle East conflicts, including Israel and Iran. Management said the conflicts create material uncertainty for the company and portfolio companies; this sits alongside $153.516 million of unfunded commitments requiring continued access to capital.
