HPE earnings analysis

What we found in HPE's 10-Q: the parts that mattered, the offsets in the same document, and what the company said about what comes next.

Our reading of the filing · Free to read, no account needed

HPE delivered strong fiscal third-quarter results, with revenue up 33.7% to $12.213B, GAAP operating margin up 8.7 points to 11.4%, and GAAP diluted EPS of $1.06 versus $0.21 a year earlier. Networking benefited substantially from Juniper, while Cloud & AI produced 25.4% revenue growth and more than doubled operating earnings. Cash generation and debt reduction improved, but elevated inventory, AI-component shortages, trade uncertainty and Juniper integration costs remain material risks.

What stood out

The parts that mattered.

Pulled out of the filing itself, with the figures the company reported.

Record revenue and strong EPS growth
Third-quarter revenue was $12.213B, up 33.7% from $9.136B a year earlier. GAAP diluted EPS was $1.06 versus $0.21, while non-GAAP diluted EPS was $1.11 versus $0.44.
Sharp margin expansion
GAAP gross margin expanded to 40.1% from 29.2%, a 10.9-point increase, while operating margin rose to 11.4% from 2.7%, an 8.7-point increase.
Networking growth led by Juniper
Networking revenue increased 74.9% to $2.893B, led by Juniper-related revenue; operating earnings rose 74.5% to $637M, with a 22.0% operating margin.
Cloud & AI delivered major leverage
Cloud & AI revenue grew 25.4% to $9.042B, led by Server revenue of $6.766B, up 35.3%. Segment operating earnings increased 205.4% to $1.539B and operating margin reached 17.0%.
Cash generation improved materially
Operating cash flow was $1.641B, up from $1.305B, and free cash flow was $958M versus $790M in the prior-year quarter. Nine-month free cash flow was $2.581B versus $(934)M.
Lower debt and higher liquidity
Cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash increased to $6.278B from $5.859B at October 31, 2025, while total debt declined to $20.244B from $22.365B.
What to watch

And the other side of it.

The offsets in the same document — the things a summary that only listed the good news would have left out.

Elevated inventory and component exposure
Inventory days of supply increased to 145 days from 100 days in the prior-year quarter and 89 days at October 31, 2025. Management attributes the increase to purchases supporting planned future shipments and warns that advance purchases of memory and SSDs may further increase inventory.
AI-driven memory supply constraints
Management reports shortages of GPUs, accelerated processing units, SSDs and memory components and expects memory-supply constraints to continue in the medium term. Higher component and logistics costs may affect revenue and margin growth.
Tariff and trade-policy uncertainty
The Company identifies substantial tariff uncertainty following new tariffs announced after the Supreme Court’s February 20, 2026 ruling; tariff refunds received or applied for are not expected to be material, while the duration and level of future tariffs remain uncertain.
Juniper integration execution costs
Juniper integration generated $69M of acquisition costs in the quarter and $300M for the first nine months. HPE expects at least $600M of synergies by fiscal 2028 but approximately $800M of investment is expected to achieve them.
Integration-related operating cost growth
R&D expense increased 86.2% to $1.158B in the quarter, while SG&A increased 31.1% to $1.962B, primarily due to Juniper-related costs and higher variable employee costs.
Uncertain tax audit outcome
The IRS audit of fiscal 2020 through 2022 resulted in $318M of increased reserves for unrecognized tax benefits. Existing unrecognized tax benefits could be reduced by up to $366M within the next twelve months, subject to resolution of the audit.
