HCSG delivered Q2 revenue of $470.808 million, up 2.7% year over year and 1.7% sequentially, while diluted EPS of $0.32 reversed a $0.44 loss in the prior-year quarter. Gross margin rose to 15.9% and operating margin to 4.7%, primarily because the prior-year period included $61.2 million of customer-bankruptcy bad debt; sequential margins nevertheless declined from Q1 levels. Liquidity remains strong at $200.865 million of cash and securities with no credit-facility borrowings, although working capital fell $25.633 million and the company committed $44.3 million to first-half share repurchases.
The parts that mattered.
Pulled out of the filing itself, with the figures the company reported.
- Revenue growth resumed sequentially
- Q2 revenue increased 2.7% year over year to $470.808 million from $458.491 million. Sequentially, revenue rose 1.7% from implied Q1 2026 revenue of $462.766 million.
- Profitability recovered sharply year over year
- Gross margin expanded to 15.9% from 0.6% in Q2 2025, as costs of services fell 13.1% to $396.015 million while revenue grew. Operating margin improved to 4.7% from negative 10.1%, although it was below Q1 2026's 7.3%.
- EPS turned positive year over year
- Net income was $22.696 million, compared with a $32.366 million loss a year earlier, and diluted EPS was $0.32 versus a $0.44 loss. EPS declined $0.05 sequentially from $0.37 in Q1 2026.
- Both operating segments delivered growth
- Both segments grew: EVS revenue rose 3.6% to $213.204 million and Dietary rose 1.9% to $257.604 million. Management attributes growth to client wins and retention, contractual price increases, and higher customer pass-through costs.
- Operating cash flow strengthened
- Six-month operating cash flow increased to $65.600 million from $56.288 million. Management spent $3.0 million of capital expenditures through June 30 and estimates full-year 2026 capex of $5.0 million to $7.0 million, implying low capital intensity.
- Strong liquidity and no funded debt
- Liquidity remained substantial, with $200.865 million of cash and securities and no borrowings on the $300 million credit facility at June 30, 2026. The facility maturity was extended to April 7, 2031.
And the other side of it.
The offsets in the same document — the things a summary that only listed the good news would have left out.
- New energy and input-cost risk factor
- The only stated risk-factor change is a new macroeconomic/geopolitical risk factor as of June 30, 2026: Middle East instability and energy/commodity disruption could raise fuel, transportation, wage, food, and supply costs if pricing and pass-through mechanisms do not offset them. Management says recent tariff and trade-policy changes have had no material impact to date.
- Bad-debt normalization drove much of recovery
- The year-over-year margin rebound reflects the absence of $61.2 million of bad-debt expense recorded in Q2 2025 from large customer bankruptcies. That comparison creates a difficult earnings base and underscores customer-credit exposure.
- Working-capital cushion declined
- Working capital declined by $25.633 million to $380.407 million at June 30, 2026 from $406.040 million at December 31, 2025, while the current ratio fell to 3.0x from 3.4x.
- Aggressive buybacks consume liquidity
- Cash and cash equivalents decreased $1.783 million to $123.406 million, while the company used $44.3 million to repurchase 2.2 million shares during the first six months of 2026. The program still has 8.3 million shares authorized, potentially continuing the cash deployment.
- Short customer contract termination windows
- Customer agreements are generally cancellable with 30 to 90 days' notice after initial terms of 60 to 120 days. This short contract duration exposes the $470.808 million quarterly revenue base to retention and facility-volume risk.
