Golub Capital BDC reported June-quarter total investment income of $187.730 million, down $0.404 million sequentially and approximately 9.3% from the $207 million reported in fiscal 2025 Q3, while GAAP EPS was $0.22 and net investment income remained near-flat at $85.217 million. The quarter benefited from a sharp reduction in unrealized mark losses versus March, producing $57.009 million of net assets income, but credit quality weakened as non-accrual investments rose to 1.9% of fair value. Liquidity strengthened through substantial debt repayment and expanded revolver availability, though lower rates, spread compression and continuing realized losses remain headwinds.
The parts that mattered.
Pulled out of the filing itself, with the figures the company reported.
- Core investment income held steady sequentially
- Total investment income was $187.730 million, essentially stable sequentially versus $188.134 million in the March quarter (down $0.404 million). Net investment income after taxes was also broadly flat at $85.217 million versus $85.547 million.
- GAAP earnings rebounded from prior-quarter loss
- Net assets resulting from operations rebounded to income of $57.009 million from a $46.796 million loss in the preceding quarter, a $103.805 million sequential improvement, as net unrealized losses narrowed materially.
- Operating cash flow turned strongly positive
- Operating cash flow was $653.5 million for the nine months ended June 30, 2026, versus cash usage of $379.7 million a year earlier. The improvement reflected $829.0 million of principal repayments and investment-sale proceeds against $367.3 million of investment fundings.
- Revolver availability expanded
- Liquidity improved materially: JPM facility borrowings fell to $271.6 million at June 30 from $1.098 billion at September 30, while remaining facility availability increased to $1.726 billion from $899.1 million.
- Share repurchases continued
- The company repurchased 6.0 million shares for $78.1 million in the first nine months and subsequently repurchased another 382,300 shares for approximately $4.9 million between July 1 and August 3, 2026.
- Valuation pressure eased versus March quarter
- The June-quarter net unrealized investment loss was only $3.425 million, versus $121.988 million in the March quarter, helped by $47.603 million of appreciation that reversed prior spread-widening and restructuring marks.
And the other side of it.
The offsets in the same document — the things a summary that only listed the good news would have left out.
- Non-accrual exposure rose sharply
- Credit stress increased: non-accrual investments rose to 2.9% of total investments at cost and 1.9% at fair value at June 30, 2026, from 0.6% and 0.3%, respectively, at September 30, 2025. Loans in 15 companies and preferred equity in 5 companies were non-accrual.
- Portfolio value and loan marks declined
- Portfolio fair value declined to $8.196 billion at June 30, 2026 from $8.769 billion at September 30, 2025, while the fair value of debt investments as a percentage of principal fell to 97.0% from 98.4%.
- Realized and unrealized investment losses persisted
- Despite sequential valuation recovery, the June quarter recorded a $28.206 million net loss on investment transactions, including a $24.781 million realized loss. Management cited $13.710 million of foreign-currency translation losses and restructurings of two portfolio investments.
- Lower rates and spreads pressure earnings
- Nine-month investment income fell $70.065 million year over year to $582.871 million, driven by declining base rates, spread compression and a $101.574 million decrease in average earning debt investments. The weighted-average investment income yield was 9.8%, down from 10.9%.
- Falling rates would reduce net investment income
- Net investment income is materially rate-sensitive: management estimates a 100-basis-point base-rate decline would reduce annual net investment income by $41.164 million, assuming the June 30 balance sheet remains constant.
- No formal risk-factor updates
- There were no material changes to the risk factors disclosed in the September 30, 2025 Form 10-K, according to Item 1A of this filing.
