Our reading of the filing · Free to read, no account needed
Filana remains a pre-revenue clinical-stage biotech, reporting Q2 2026 EPS of negative $0.18 and a net loss of $8.6 million; both improved substantially from negative $0.92 and $44.2 million, respectively, a year earlier, though EPS widened from negative $0.21 in Q1 2026. Expense reductions were substantial, with R&D down 35% and G&A down 85%, but the improvement largely reflects the completed Alzheimer’s program phaseout and the absence of the prior-year $31.3 million litigation provision. Liquidity was $82.7 million at quarter-end, but a subsequent $31.25 million escrow payment and the unresolved FDA clinical hold on simufilam leave the risk/reward profile unfavorable.
The parts that mattered.
Pulled out of the filing itself, with the figures the company reported.
- Year-over-year loss narrowed sharply
- The Q2 net loss narrowed to $8.6 million, or $0.18 per diluted share, from a $44.2 million loss, or $0.92 per diluted share, in Q2 2025. EPS nevertheless widened by $0.03 sequentially from a $0.21 loss in Q1 2026.
- R&D spending reset lower
- R&D expense declined 35% to $3.3 million from $5.1 million in Q2 2025, primarily because the Alzheimer’s development-program phaseout was completed in Q2 2025. Six-month R&D fell 58% to $7.8 million from $18.8 million.
- G&A decline drove earnings improvement
- G&A expense fell 85% to $6.1 million from $40.3 million in Q2 2025, chiefly because the prior-year period included a $31.3 million securities-litigation loss contingency. First-half G&A declined 75% to $12.7 million from $51.2 million.
- Operating cash burn improved
- Cash used in operations improved to $12.7 million in the first six months of 2026 from $16.3 million a year earlier. Investing cash use was only $21,000, indicating minimal capital-spending intensity.
- Cash runway stated, but escrow reduces liquidity
- Cash and cash equivalents were $82.7 million at June 30, 2026, after a $12.8 million first-half decline. Management says this balance is sufficient for at least 12 months of operations, although $31.25 million was subsequently placed into litigation escrow.
- Pre-revenue clinical-stage business
- There is no product revenue: the company reports it has yet to generate revenue from product sales and had an accumulated deficit of $515.0 million at June 30, 2026. Accordingly, gross and operating margins are not meaningful and there are no reportable revenue segments.
And the other side of it.
The offsets in the same document — the things a summary that only listed the good news would have left out.
- FDA clinical hold delays lead program
- FDA placed the proposed TSC-related epilepsy simufilam trial on full clinical hold on December 15, 2025. The timing of trial initiation depends on providing additional preclinical data, modifying the protocol, and completing FDA review; the company has accumulated a $515.0 million deficit.
- Litigation payment materially reduces cash
- The company subsequently paid $31.25 million into a plaintiff escrow account for the securities-litigation settlement, equal to roughly 38% of the $82.7 million cash balance reported at June 30, 2026. Management also expects legal expense and potential settlements to keep G&A elevated versus historic levels.
- No risk-factor update; funding remains needed
- Item 1A states there were no material changes to risk factors from the 2025 Form 10-K. However, management expects significant future cash requirements and reported $12.7 million of operating cash use in the first six months of 2026, with no ATM shares sold under its $50 million program.

What they said about what is next.
The 10-Q provides no quantitative revenue or EPS guidance. Management states that $82.7 million of cash and cash equivalents at June 30, 2026 is sufficient to fund operations for at least the next 12 months, before noting that $31.25 million was subsequently paid into a litigation plaintiff escrow account.
