DT earnings analysis

What we found in DT's 10-Q: the parts that mattered, the offsets in the same document, and what the company said about what comes next.

Our reading of the filing · Free to read, no account needed

Dynatrace delivered $554.548 million of first-quarter revenue, up 16% year over year and 4.2% sequentially, supported by 17% ARR growth to $2.136 billion. Cash conversion was strong, with $306.240 million of operating cash flow and $309.177 million of adjusted free cash flow, although GAAP net income fell 24% to $36.651 million due to higher taxes and lower other income. The investment case is balanced: durable subscription and ARR growth offset by a 1-point year-over-year gross-margin decline, substantial capital deployment, and newly highlighted CFO-transition and shareholder-activism risks.

What stood out

The parts that mattered.

Pulled out of the filing itself, with the figures the company reported.

Revenue growth remained double digit
Revenue increased $77.199 million, or 16%, year over year to $554.548 million. Sequentially, revenue rose $22.548 million (4.2%) from $532 million in FY2026 Q4.
ARR and both revenue lines expanded
ARR reached $2.136 billion, up 17% year over year, while dollar-based net retention was 110%. Subscription revenue grew $72.748 million (16%) to $530.255 million and services grew $4.451 million (22%) to $24.293 million.
Operating profit increased despite investment
GAAP operating income increased $9.138 million, or 15%, to $71.476 million. Operating margin was 12.9%, essentially flat from 13.1% a year ago but up 5.9 percentage points sequentially from 7.0% in FY2026 Q4.
Cash generation strengthened
Operating cash flow rose $36.548 million year over year to $306.240 million. Adjusted free cash flow was $309.177 million, up from $262.157 million; capital expenditures were only $3.151 million, or about 0.6% of revenue.
Liquidity supports capital allocation
Liquidity remained substantial at $1.058 billion of cash and cash equivalents, $94.8 million of marketable securities, and $398.9 million of revolver availability. The company had $573.1 million remaining under its $1.0 billion repurchase authorization.
Management investing behind platform expansion
Management attributes subscription growth to existing-customer platform expansion and new-customer adoption; services growth reflected demand for product enablement and adoption services. It plans continued investment in agentic AI, log management, partners, R&D, and go-to-market capacity.
What to watch

And the other side of it.

The offsets in the same document — the things a summary that only listed the good news would have left out.

Hosting costs pressured gross margin
Gross margin declined to 81% from 82% year over year, as subscription hosting costs increased $13.3 million; total cost of revenue grew 21%, faster than the 16% revenue increase. Subscription gross margin fell to 85% from 86%.
Below-operating-line items reduced GAAP profit
GAAP net income declined $11.304 million, or 24%, to $36.651 million despite higher revenue. Income-tax expense increased $10.715 million to $44.150 million, while other income fell to $0.432 million from $6.757 million.
CFO transition and activism are new risks
The filing identifies an executive-transition risk: the CFO announced retirement by March 31, 2027. It also notes shareholder activism following Starboard's April 2026 investment and two board appointments in July 2026, which could divert management attention.
Buybacks and acquisition reduced cash
Cash declined $39.440 million during the quarter as Dynatrace spent $275.5 million repurchasing 7.1 million shares and paid $99.5 million for the Bindplane acquisition. Repurchases increased financing cash outflow to $269.982 million from $43.854 million a year earlier.
International and macro exposure remains high
Management warns that macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty can lengthen sales cycles and reduce deal sizes. International exposure is meaningful: customers outside the U.S. represented 54% of quarterly revenue, while approximately 70% of employees were outside the U.S. at March 31, 2026.
AI-led competition and execution risk
Risk-factor disclosures emphasize intensifying AI and platform competition, including Cisco's 2024 Splunk acquisition and Palo Alto Networks' 2026 Chronosphere acquisition. Rapid AI development may require further investment and create execution, cybersecurity, and regulatory risks.
