What we found in CWBC's 10-Q: the parts that mattered, the offsets in the same document, and what the company said about what comes next.
Our reading of the filing · Free to read, no account needed
Community West Bancshares delivered strong merger-driven balance-sheet expansion and higher net interest income, but reported GAAP diluted EPS fell to $0.10 from $0.60 sequentially and $0.41 year over year. Results were pressured by $7.747 million of merger costs, a $5.899 million securities-sale loss, $5.635 million of credit-loss provision, and elevated operating expenses. Liquidity and capital remain strong, but rising nonperforming assets, classified loans, charge-offs, and heavy commercial real estate concentration create meaningful downside risk. No numeric forward revenue or EPS guidance was provided.
The parts that mattered.
Pulled out of the filing itself, with the figures the company reported.
- Net interest income and margin expanded
- Second-quarter net interest income before provision for credit losses increased 41.4% year over year to $50.912 million from $36.003 million in Q1 2026 and $33.304 million in Q2 2025. Fully tax-equivalent net interest margin improved to 4.56% from 4.30% sequentially and 4.10% year over year.
- Merger drove substantial balance-sheet growth
- The USB merger materially expanded the balance sheet: total assets rose 36.42% to $5.034 billion from $3.690 billion at December 31, 2025, while gross loans increased 39.47% to $3.544 billion and deposits increased 33.09% to $4.119 billion.
- Liquidity position improved
- Liquidity strengthened, with cash and cash equivalents increasing 73.84% to $206.837 million from $118.984 million at December 31, 2025. Management also reported $369.697 million of unpledged securities, $703.907 million of unused FHLB capacity, and $150.000 million of unsecured correspondent credit lines.
- Capital ratios remain solid
- Capital remained above regulatory minimums: the Company reported a 9.79% Tier 1 leverage ratio, 11.41% CET1 ratio, 11.53% Tier 1 risk-based ratio, and 13.63% total risk-based capital ratio at June 30, 2026.
- Core earnings exceeded GAAP EPS
- Reported EPS was $0.10 versus $0.60 in Q1 2026 and $0.41 in Q2 2025. Management identified $7.747 million of merger and conversion costs and a $5.899 million securities-sale loss; excluding those non-core items, comparable diluted EPS was $0.45.
- Operating cash flow increased
- Six-month operating cash flow was $30.486 million versus $22.596 million in the prior-year period. Purchases of premises and equipment were $4.829 million versus $1.272 million, implying capex intensity of approximately 15.8% of operating cash flow.
And the other side of it.
The offsets in the same document — the things a summary that only listed the good news would have left out.
- Credit costs and charge-offs accelerated
- Credit costs increased materially: the second-quarter provision for credit losses was $5.635 million versus $90,000 in Q1 2026 and $2.613 million in Q2 2025. Net loan charge-offs were $5.498 million, compared with $13,000 in the prior-year quarter.
- Asset quality deteriorated
- Nonperforming assets rose to $27.942 million from $6.955 million at December 31, 2025, including $19.757 million of nonaccrual loans and $8.2 million of other real estate acquired through the merger. Classified loans increased to $110.260 million from $78.796 million.
- High commercial real estate concentration
- Commercial real estate represented approximately 56.9% of total loans, and commercial real estate non-owner-occupied loans totaled $1.266 billion. Management warned that an economic slowdown or decline in real estate values could increase nonperforming loans and adversely affect results.
- Reserve and delinquency pressure
- The allowance for credit losses increased to $49.422 million, or 1.39% of gross loans, from $30.071 million, or 1.18%, at December 31, 2025. Past-due loans of 30 days or more increased to $34.320 million from $23.208 million.
- Securities repositioning reduced earnings
- Second-quarter non-interest income was negative $1.970 million versus positive $2.364 million in Q2 2025, driven by a $5.899 million net realized loss on investment securities. Available-for-sale securities carried $35.397 million of gross unrealized losses at June 30, 2026.
- Integration costs weighed on efficiency
- Non-interest expense increased 75.6% year over year to $39.143 million from $22.296 million, including $7.746 million of merger and acquisition expense and $1.873 million of core-deposit-intangible amortization. The filing states there were no material changes to previously disclosed risk factors.
