CDXS earnings analysis

What we found in CDXS's 10-Q: the parts that mattered, the offsets in the same document, and what the company said about what comes next.

Our reading of the filing · Free to read, no account needed

Codexis delivered mixed Q2 results: revenue declined 3% year over year to $14.915 million because a 79% increase in product revenue was more than offset by a 79% decline in R&D revenue. Product gross margin improved to 73%, operating expenses fell 7%, and diluted EPS improved to a $0.13 loss, but the company remains substantially loss-making and used $22.793 million of operating cash in the first half. Liquidity was reinforced by approximately $23.1 million of post-quarter public-offering proceeds, although cash declined to $27.172 million at quarter-end and debt principal was $40.0 million.

What stood out

The parts that mattered.

Pulled out of the filing itself, with the figures the company reported.

Product growth offset R&D revenue decline
Q2 revenue was $14.915 million, down $0.413 million, or 3%, from $15.328 million in Q2 2025. Product revenue increased 79% to $13.218 million, offset by a 79% decline in R&D revenue to $1.697 million.
Product gross margin improved to 73%
Product gross margin improved to 73% from 72% in Q2 2025, which management attributed to a shift toward more profitable products and declines in less profitable legacy products.
Operating loss and EPS improved
Loss from operations narrowed to $11.229 million from $12.862 million, while net loss narrowed to $12.005 million from $13.272 million. Diluted EPS improved to a $0.13 loss from a $0.16 loss.
Cost reductions continued
Operating expenses declined 7% to $26.144 million. R&D expense decreased 15% to $11.705 million and SG&A decreased 11% to $10.927 million, primarily due to lower headcount and related costs.
Operating cash burn improved
Cash used in operating activities was $22.793 million for the first six months, an improvement from $31.765 million in the prior-year period. Investing cash flow was an outflow of $0.936 million, with management noting reduced capital expenditures.
ECO GMP facility moves toward construction
The company applied for a building permit during Q2 2026 and expects retrofit construction for its 34,000-square-foot ECO GMP Manufacturing Center to begin during the second half of 2026.
What to watch

And the other side of it.

The offsets in the same document — the things a summary that only listed the good news would have left out.

Persistent losses and accumulated deficit
The company reported a $20.709 million net loss for the first six months and had an accumulated deficit of $627.5 million at June 30, 2026. Management expects significant operating expenses and net losses to continue as it develops and commercializes ECO Synthesis.
Liquidity and debt burden
Cash and cash equivalents fell to $27.172 million from $50.793 million at December 31, 2025, while six-month operating cash use was $22.793 million. The company also had $40.0 million of Innovatus principal outstanding plus $1.6 million of accrued payment-in-kind interest.
Customer concentration increased
Customers contributing at least 10% individually represented 60% of total revenue for the six months ended June 30, 2026, versus 43% in the prior-year period, increasing exposure to customer losses, order timing and contract renewals.
ECO GMP execution and scale-up risk
The company currently does not manufacture GMP-grade products at its own facilities and remains reliant on third-party CDMOs. Retrofit construction of the 34,000-square-foot ECO GMP Manufacturing Center is expected to begin only in the second half of 2026.
BIOSECURE Act supply-chain exposure
The filing newly highlights the U.S. BIOSECURE Act, enacted in December 2025, and notes that existing contracts have a five-year grandfathering period. Future restrictions could affect counterparties and foreign manufacturing relationships.
Cybersecurity and AI-related risk
The filing expands discussion of AI-related cybersecurity exposure, noting that attacks may use AI tools and that the company has received phishing emails and phone calls seeking sensitive information. A significant breach could disrupt operations and cause liability.
